When I started researching the history of knitting, I expected to discover legends and myths, also the view that knitting was introduced to Europe by the Copts (a branch of Christianity in Egypt). On a mission trip they carried knitting with them and managed to attract worldwide attention.
In 13th century France, knitting became one of the most profitable branches of industry. Knitted hats, gloves, tops, socks and anything else that can be knitted. In Scotland, the traditional headgear - the knitted cap - was created and is preserved to this day. A surprising fact (because not many people know this) is that knitting was basically a male occupation, to the point where men fought in any way and with special agreements to prevent women from taking up knitting.
In 1612 in Prague they had even established a fine for women who simply decided to knit. Later, however, when knitting became widespread, mainly women began to deal with it. In the 19th century, a new form of knitting, crochet became a very enjoyable and popular pastime, and the production of crochet lace was so great that it was described as a 'worldwide craze'. Throughout Europe, men's and women's clothing and underwear were now decorated with lace.
